Key questions to ask:
– What Will I gain by replacing the older tech with the newer tech? [Substitution]
– Have I added an improvement that can not be accomplished at the lower level?[Augmentation]
– Does this new modification fundamentally depend on the new technology? [Modification]
– How is the new task uniquely made possible by the new technology? [Redefinition]
SAMR model video – How to use tech to get to the upper levels of thinking; don’t just use tech as a tool to replace pen and paper. It wants you to push students to a level of thinking that redefines what they know – learn from an author through skype about their book and get their thinking started that way for example.
Video on how to apply the SAMR model – a teacher who graduated from Harvard talks about how to feel comfortable and use tools in order to make the SAMR model work. Some key points:
* you don’t always have to be in the upper levels of thinking – it’s ok to have teaching that enhances learning while also having some that transforms knowledge
* what could you do without tech to get them into upper levels?
* make it a learning experience that changes it from something they would do personally to something they would do socially. Tech can help to bring things that were once inconceivable into the classroom.
* teach students how to take charge of their own education; tech can help you do that easier .
